Third English club enters race for Cahill

ENGLISH side Queens Park Rangers are reportedly discussing the possibility of offering a short-term contract to Socceroos star Tim Cahill.

Cahill, who hasn't kicked a ball since leaving Melbourne City in December is desperate for regular football with the Socceroos' opening fixture of the World Cup against France less than five months' away.

That is now the third English club to ponder signing the 38-year-old, with the Nottingham Post reporting Nottingham Forest have "held talks" with Cahill, while Millwall have offered him a contract.

The European transfer window closes at midnight on Wednesday (0900 Thursday AEDT) but Cahill is a free agent so can move after the window closes.

Cahill, who scored the two goals that beat Syria in October to preserve Australia's World Cup hopes, needs to convince new coach Bert van Marwijk he's worthy of a spot on the plane to Russia.

The 38-year-old, who is Australia's record goalscorer, has been heavily linked with a return to Millwall, where he started his career, but the south London club, who are one the Championship's least resourced clubs, recently denied any deal had been agreed.

West London Sport, a website with close links to QPR, reported on Sunday that Cahill's name has been discussed at Loftus Road, with the Championship outfit keen to bolster an attack that's struggled for goals this season.

Cahill's former Millwall teammate Marc Bircham is the assistant manager at Rangers and the pair remain close friends.

A move to QPR would see Cahill link up with Socceroos midfielder Massimo Luongo.
