Son comes to the rescue after boat crashes into rocks

BOATIES stranded after their vessel sank off the coast of Shute Harbour overnight were rescued by a family member, a Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said.

The boat sank off South Molle Island sometime Saturday night, the spokesman said. Paramedics met two people after they had been saved from the sinking boat at Shute Harbour about 10.30pm Saturday and took them to Proserpine Hospital.

The occupants of the boat suffered minor chest injuries when they hit the rocks, as they were thrown into the "console of the boat", the spokesman said.

"They've apparently hit some rocks and one the occupant's sons came in his boat and picked them up."

The QAS spokesman was unable to provide details about the passengers, such as their gender and age.

A VMR Whitsundays spokeswoman said the rescue service had heard about the boat sinking, but had not been tasked to rescue the occupants.

Queensland Police Service's Whitsunday Water Police were not aware of the incident when contacted this morning.
