$1.35 million splash for new water park in the region
A $1.35 MILLION water park for Proserpine, a rock wall for Wilson's Beach and an RV stop for Proserpine are big-ticket items announced in the Whitsunday Regional Council budget.
The biggest item in the 2017/18 budget for Proserpine is a further $750,000 for a water park in the town.
At the announcement of the 2016/17 budget last year, $600,000 was allocated for the project but never got spent.
Funding for a children's water park in Prosperine after last week's budget announcement now totals $1.35m.
Division 3 councillor John Collins said in the wake of Cyclone Debbie it had been a tough year for everyone and for this reason there would be no residential rate increase.
However there will be a 2% rate increase for non-residential properties.
"As the Division 3 councillor, I am happy with the outcome for our area. There are a few things that have been in the pipeline for a few years now that are finally coming to fruition," he said.
"These are the rock wall for Wilson's Beach, there have been funds set aside for the RV stop in Proserpine and finally, all funding for the waterpark for Proserpine."
Mayor Andrew Willcox indicated last week the park would be built next to the Proserpine pool on Anzac Rd. But Cr Collins would not confirm this and said "it's too early to tell" where it would be built.
In Division 3 there will be money for play equipment upgrades at Conway.
