A PROSERPINE mother of three was crowned this year's Proserpine Lions Volunteer of the Year and was recognised for her tireless donation of time for the community.

Jane Welbourne received the Wally Hinschen memorial title at the Proserpine Lions Club dinner last Wednesday.

Mrs Welbourne said she got into volunteering when her three children were young and were involved in sport - athletics in particular.

She volunteered as an athletics official, a helper at the canteen, on parents and citizens committees and hosted a couple of exchange students through the Lions Club exchange program.

“It was very surprising [to win],” she said.

“I didn't realise people watched me so closely.”

When she isn't volunteering, Mrs Welbourne works at the Westpac Bank in Proserpine and said she had the award on display there.

“I've had the award here and the feedback [from customers] has just been great,” she said.

Proserpine Lion's club spokesman Horace Lowbridge said the community members nominated people who they thought were generous citizens within the community.

“Jane has done a lot for the Whitsunday athletics clubs and has been involved in Relay for Life,” he said.

“Jane was the one who stood out.”
