Race crowd smashes world record for sunglasses at night

FOR the biggest social race meet in the state, it was an easy record to smash and Ipswich did it.

The city now holds the Guinness world record for the most people wearing sunglasses at night.

Officials recorded 2570 people at the Ipswich Cup after-party on Saturday.

That number wasn't quite what Cup organisers hoped for, but well ahead of the record of 1675 people, set at the LaughFest held in Michigan, US.

Ipswich Turf Club general manager Brett Kitching was always confident of smashing the world record.

"There were a few that missed out, that we didn't get the certificates to," Mr Kitching said.

"There would have been 3000-4000 people there for the after party but according to the certificate count the number was 2570 which has well and truly beaten the record."

Ipswich Turf Club ordered 5000 pairs of special glow in the dark, fluorescent green sunglasses with "Ipswich Cup 2015" and "World Record 2015" written on the sides.

The sunglasses were handed out on the day together with numbered official certificates to get a final official number.

Two independent witnesses, local politicians Jennifer Howard and Shayne Neumann, and two time keepers from Racing Queensland together with video and photographic evidence helped verify the record.

As the record was broken, participants celebrated to the sounds of Electric '80s playing Corey Hart's Sunglasses At Night.

"We wanted to use the record attempt to stress it's the Ipswich community who have helped build the Cup into what it is today," Mr Kitching said.

"The record really is theirs to be proud of."
