Steam trials begin at Proserpine Mill

It's full steam ahead at the Proserpine Mill with the 2016 crush almost upon us.

With the first billets of cane set to arrive on June 14, site manager Danny Van der Berg said they were finishing maintenance.

"We've done substantial refurbishment to our steam and power plant again this year, including one of our large generators," he said.

"It was part of our normal routine maintenance program identifying plant equipment that requires refurbishment or life extension."

Steam trials begin today and continue on June 30 and 31.

"Basically, we start to create steam in the factory and start to run trials of our high energy equipment in the plant," Mr Van der Berg said.

Work is set to continue right up until the crush begins, but preparations are progressing well.

"We have our program basically right down to the last day," Mr Van der Berg said.

"Everything is just about on track."

Proserpine is expected to crush around 1.71 million tonnes of cane this year, up from 1.67 million in 2015.

The mill heads into the 2016 crush on a high, with an impressive track record for safety so

far. "Our safety performance is an improvement on the previous year," Mr Van der Berg said.

"We've had fewer injured people, although safety continues to be a key focus for us."

The mill also received an award in the past fortnight.

"Proserpine received an award at the Australian Society of Sugar Technologies for improvements to our feeding station," Mr Van der Berg said.

Cane trains will begin moving in "about two weeks' time", with Mr Van der Berg warning residents to be vigilant.
