Steketee to unleash pace: Law

YOU just have to ask Bangladesh batsman Asif Ahmed just how fast Warwick paceman Mark Steketee is bowling at the ICC Under 19 World Cup in Townsville.

Ahmed fell victim to Steketee's pace in Australia's quarter-final victory over Bangladesh on Sunday when he was struck on the head from a thunderbolt from the right-arm quick.

Steketee got his man as he soon after had Ahmed out caught behind for just one run.

The 18-year-old Warwick quick will now look to terrorise the South African top-order when Australia takes on their well-rated opponents in today's semi-final at Townsville's Tony Ireland Stadium.

Steketee has taken four wickets from his three matches at the tournament so far and Australia coach, Queensland legend Stuart Law, has been impressed with his young firebrand.

He is now expecting Steketee to make a big impression at the business end of the tournament.

"Mark has exceeded our expectations," Law said.

"He has bowled beautifully but the results are not showing. Batsmen are playing hook shots against him and the ball is going over the keeper's head for four.

"Mark is getting better and better in each game and he is putting our plans into place. If he carries on doing what he is doing, the wickets will come.

"If he keeps believing and keeps bowling his heart out, it will turn for him."

A low-key Steketee yesterday said his body was holding up well and that he was happy with his tournament to date.

"I'm feeling good," he said. "I've been going alright."

South Africa, like Australia, is undefeated at the tournament and Law rates the junior Proteas as the team to beat.
