Stinger net shot just one big croc: sightings unconfirmed

A PHOTOGRAPH of a crocodile climbing onto a stinger net that emerged on Whitsunday social media sites late last week is not believed to have been taken at Boathaven Beach.

While the image sparked plenty of conversation, no local sightings have been confirmed.

A Department of Environment Heritage Protection (EHP) spokesperson said there had certainly been no reports of sightings at the Port of Airlie but reiterated it was very important to always practice "croc wise" behaviour in croc country

Likewise, president of the Airlie Beach Royal Life Saving branch, Stuart Casey, said to his knowledge there had been no crocodile incidents at Boathaven Beach.

"None at all," he said.

"That photograph has been doing the rounds for about nine months and I believe it was taken in Cairns.

"It's certainly not at Boathaven according to the information I have."

Mr Casey also pointed out the stinger net was actually removed from Boathaven Beach about three weeks ago.

He said it was due to be replaced by a larger one in time for the opening of the new Airlie Aqua Park later this month.

As for crocodiles, he reiterated "yes, we live in crocodile habitat and people should always be careful in the water".

Members of the public are urged to report all crocodile sightings to EHP on 1300 130 372.

All reports of crocodile sightings are investigated.
