Stockland steps up security after shopping centre attack

STOCKLAND Rockhampton has vowed to increase centre security over the festive season to ensure customer safety.

Following the incident of a security guard being attacked by up to nine youths on Monday night, the local shopping centre has been working with police to resolve the issue.

Stockland Rockhampton centre manager Nathanial Barbagallo said he was grateful to the security team for its vigilance and quick response to the incident.

"Our absolute priority is to ensure Stockland Rockhampton remains a safe and inviting place for customers to shop and socialise," he said.

"Our customers' safety and wellbeing is our highest priority, followed by the protection of property.

"We have the appropriate physical and electronic security measures in place throughout our shopping centre to ensure we maintain a safe and secure environment for customers, retailers and our staff."

Mr Barbagallo said he encouraged customers and retail staff to immediately report any future incidents to police or centre management.

"We will be increasing security in and around the centre over the Christmas and holiday trading period.

"The police investigation is ongoing and we are providing our full assistance to their inquiries and we will continue to work with police and social agencies to address the issue," he said.

Acting Inspector Ben Carroll said police were working with the centre in regards to the ongoing matters.

"We have rostered police specifically to Stockland over this period," he said. "We will investigate and prosecute when there is a sufficient amount of evidence."
