A STOMACH bug has forced Prime Minister Julia Gillard to cancel a number of major appointments during her first day in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly.

Ms Gillard, who along with Foreign Minister Bob Carr is attempting to win Australia a seat at the UN Security Council, was due to give a speech to the Asia Society and The Economic Club.

But owing to Ms Gillard's ill health the speech was delivered by Senator Carr.

The Prime Minister was still expected to address the General Assembly later in the week to push Australia's case for reinstatement to the Security Council.

It's 25 years since Australia was a member of the Security Council.
