Stop whingeing, athletes told

CONTROVERSIAL runners John Steffensen and Josh Ross have agreed to run their relays despite maintaining their rage at being denied the chance to run individual races, with Steffensen also criticising Australia's chef de mission Nick Green.

Steffensen called on the federal government to hold an independent review of selection in Australia after the Olympics and criticised Athletics Australia for its selection policy. He added it had recently decided to speak out over his frustration at the lack of a ''no tolerance for racism policy'' in Athletics.

Ross said he was in career-best form and was gutted that he had not been chosen as a discretionary pick to run the 100m sprint as well as the relay.

''Now I am making them look like fools, I have just run 10.23 [seconds] a couple of days ago in Italy in cold, 14 degree weather in the rain - puddles on the track,'' Ross said.

''I believe I have the potential right now to make a semi-final or an Olympic final in the form that I am in. I believe I am in 10.0, 10.1 shape right now and that time can make an Olympic final. Why not give me the opportunity? It makes no sense.''
