Students unite behind a true Christmas message

PROSERPINE State School students came together last week to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas.

Year one students, dressed up as important religious figures such as Mary, Joseph and even a group of angels, performed in the annual ecumenical activity play.

The purpose behind an ecumenical play is to unite different Christian denominations behind one simple message ahead of Christmas.

Proserpine State School year one teacher Sue Spruce said the youngsters gave an amazing performance with minimal guidance required.

"They did a wonderful job, normally I have to sit with them and help them when things go wrong, but they are such a bright young group of kids they managed to do it all by themselves,” she said.

"The year one students do this play every year to portray the true meaning of Christmas. It's important for them to know it's not just about Santa.”

Accompanied by the junior Christmas school choir, conducted by music teacher Elspeth Scotford, the group performed a variety of classics including Away in a Manger and Silent Night.

Mrs Scotford praised the choir for their commitment and passion.

"My junior choir won gold at the eisteddfod, they are an excellent choir and always rise to the occasion,” she said.

Proserpine State School also hosted Carols by Candlelight on the school oval last week featuring the junior and senior choirs.
