Sunshine Coast man killed in crash near Warwick

A 79-year-old man from the Sunshine Coast was fatally injured in the crash on the Cunningham Highway near Bestbrook this morning.

Warwick police were on the scene for more than four hours after a vehicle left the road and ended upside down in the table drain just before 7.20am. One unit from the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service was on the scene for two and a half hours.

Sergeant Shane Reid said it was believed the man died on impact.

"We are not aware of any motorists seeing the accident happen but if there is someone who saw the accident, we would ask them to come forward," he said.

The man was the only occupant of the car involved in a single-vehicle accident. He was heading towards Brisbane and was only a short distance from Cunningham's Gap.

As reported earlier, there was little disruption to traffic as police slowed drivers down as they negotiated the accident site.

Lanes were changed using traffic cones to divert traffic away from the side of the road where the damaged car was in the table drain. Traffic proceeded in single lanes in each direction.

The highway was only closed for a short time when the car was pulled back on its feet and loaded on a tow truck.
