A FEATURE film with a strong Ballina connection has been selected for two screenings at the iconic Cannes Film Festival in France this month.

Going Vertical is a film about the revolution of the size of surfboards, from longboards to shortboards.

It was produced by Robert Raymond, who has lived in Ballina Shire for 10 years, is narrated by actor and former Ballina High School student Simon Baker.

The modern-day surf clips feature former Ballina surfer and current world champion Mick Fanning and up-and-coming local Owen Wright.

Lennox Head shaper Bob McTavish is also an integral part of the film.

Mr Raymond said this was the first time a surf film would be screened at the internationally-renowned film festival.

He produced the film Schindler’s List during his 17-year stint working in Hollywood, which was also screened at Cannes.

Mr Raymond said it was ‘an honour and very exciting’ to have his latest offering on the bill.

“There isn’t a bigger or more important film festival in the world than Cannes,” he said.

The film will make its Cannes debut on May 13. It proved popular when it screened at Ballina Fair Cinemas last month.

Originally the film was scheduled to have one screening, but was shown three times.

Mr Raymond said the cinema was packed each time and that there may be another showing in Ballina in June.
