Surf queen calling kids to try series

QUEEN of the waves, six-time world surfing champion Stephanie Gilmore, has thrown her support behind an Aussie icon and its world-record bid.

Gilmore, one of the finest products Australian surfing has produced, was at Sunshine Coast Grammar School yesterday, encouraging students to get involved in the Sunshine Coast leg of the 2015 Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon series which hits Lake Kawana on May 24.

Weet-Bix is aiming to have more than 1000 kids aged seven to 15 take part in the under-16 event and Gilmore said she was proud to promote active lifestyles for local kids.

"It's about just getting in there and having a try," she said. "I understand the importance of using your body and just how much health benefits you get out of just going out there and being active."

Student Jade Zikarsky, 11, whose father was an Olympic swimmer, was stoked to come face to face with one of her sporting idols yesterday.
