Girls don't watch from the shore

IF you are female and have always wanted to learn to ride a surfboard, keep January 21 and 22 free.

That is when the annual Girls Go Surfing Day comes to Coolum and Mudjimba beaches.

In its 22nd year, the learn-to-surf program is held nationally at more than 40 beaches through the Surfing Australia surf schools network.

It encourages female non-surfers and beginners of all ages to experience the thrill of surfing.

The event also aims to promote the benefits surfing provides for the fitness and wellbeing of women.

Surf schools at Mudjimba and Coolum will host events.

Genevieve Kendall, from Coolum Surfing School, said the day was a great opportunity to learn to surf in a "comfortable and non-threatening atmosphere".

"Surfing is a very male-dominated sport," Ms Kendall said.

"It can be intimidating out in the water so the programs aim to give the girls the confidence and knowledge of what to do and how to go about doing it."

Seven-time ASP women's world champion Layne Beachley encouraged all females who were thinking about giving surfing a go to participate in the day.
