'Rescued dogs stopped my daughter from having seizures'

SUE-Ellen Thompson became a foster carer to help animals, but she ended up helping her daughter in a way she never could have imagined.

Madison, 12, has type-one diabetes and was experiencing seizures every week.

The medication she was on wasn't controlling the seizures.

It wasn't until her mum signed up to be a foster carer with the Friends of RSPCA and that she was around dogs more that her seizures finally stopped.

"It must have something to do with being able to help these surrendered dogs... a sense of accomplishment," Sue-Ellen said.

Ms Thompson had looked into buying a special dog that would support Madison's condition, but at a sum of $20,000, she said it was unlikely to happen.

"I wanted to help out the animals too and I thought it would be a good opportunity to try to find a dog in Gladstone that might be able to help Madison. I didn't know how likely it would be to find one... but I haven't even had to."

While Madison still has an insulin pump, her life isn't confined by a plague of seizures anymore.

She and her mum Sue-Ellen are caring for a litter of husky-kelpie cross puppies that was surrendered to the Gladstone Pound last week.
