MP apologises for deodorant stink

QUEENSLAND Coalition MP Teresa Gambaro has apologised for any offence caused by comments attributed to her in a newspaper interview calling for immigrants to be taught how to use deodorant.

Ms Gambaro was quoted in The Australian newspaper today saying she was concerned new migrants on work visas were not integrating into the community because they had failed to be taught about cultural issues related to health, hygiene and lifestyle.

She said wearing deodorant and waiting in line politely were about "teaching what are norms in Australia".

The comments immediately sparked a furious reaction online and from Australia's peak migrant body.

Having refused requests for an interview this morning, Ms Gambaro issued a statement which said her comments had been taken out of context, were inappropriate and did not reflect Coalition policy.
