Team protests after fan attacks

SOCCEROOS' Brett Holman and his Dutch club AZ Alkmaar teammates have walked off in protest halfway through a match after the club's goalkeeper was attacked by a rival fan.

Playing away against Ajax in a Dutch Cup match, the AZ players were ordered off the field by their furious manager Gertjan Verbeek when 'keeper Esteban Alvarado was shown a red card for violent conduct against the pitch invader.

The protest followed a bizarre incident when an Ajax fan evaded security and made a bee-line for Alvarado in the 36th minute.

The fan kicked out as he approached Alvarado, but the Costa Rican international managed to avoid the initial contact.

However, Alvarado then aggressively struck out as the pitch invader lay on the ground.

Ajax - leading the game 1-0 - apologised for the incident but Dutch football authorities have yet to decide whether the game will be replayed.
