Teams locked in dead heat

CRICKET: After almost 80 overs, Valleys and Warriors could not be split.

The end result was a thrilling tie with both teams finishing on 164.

Batting first, Valleys struggled somewhat with opening bowlers Shane Knight (1/35) and Warren Watts (1/57) both bowling their eight overs straight to keep the pressure on Valleys.

Teams have still yet to grasp the importance of holding onto catches as Scott Hardy was dropped a total of four times in yet another leading innings for Valleys.

But each and every time Hardy has been dropped this year, he has made the opposition pay.

And this match was no different, with Hardy racing to 84 before Warriors' leading bowler Chris Wren struck.

Mike Hope (17) and Brett Simpson (16) tried to steady the ship.

However they could not hold off Chris Wren who tore through Valleys' middle order to finish with the impressive figures of 5/28.

Valleys were bundled out for 164 runs.

With a smallish total to defend, early wickets would be key for Valleys' success.

Mike Hope answered the call, slicing through Warriors top order with 4/12 after his eight overs.

He was ably assisted yet again by Valleys miracle man Scott Hardy (4/32) as the pair threatened to steal the game from Warriors.

However, Warriors veteran and self-proclaimed "oldest man on the field”, Warren Watts, put on a patient and calculated batting display, knocking up 46 runs to put Warriors back in front.

Youngsters Matthew Shoebridge (16) and Howard McDonald (16 not out) provided some assistance, however it was Chris Wren's day. Wren put on an unbeaten 33 runs to almost see his side home.

It all came down to the last ball, with Warriors requiring two runs to win.

The resultant delivery brought about a swing and miss from Wren with youngster Howard McDonald quick to scamper through for a run to see both teams finish on 164 runs.

Warriors will take an extra 0.2 points from the game as they finished eight down while Valleys were bowled out.

This Saturday the Warriors will take on the Canecutters from 12.30pm at the Proserpine Sporting Complex.

New or returning players are welcome as all teams are looking for players.
