Bain paddling for Olympic glory

SUNSHINE Coast teenage paddler Bill Bain pushed some of the country's best at the Grand Prix 1 regatta in Perth on the weekend.

Bain, from Buddina, made the A final of all three open events in which he competed, the 200m, 500m and 1000m.

He finished fifth in the 500m and 1000m and eighth in the 200m.

He led the 500m and 200m races but faded in the final quarter of the race after a less-than-ideal preparation.

K1 Junior World Marathon champion Bain, 17, said his training time had been limited after graduating from Matthew Flinders College two weeks ago.

He said his slow finish could be attributed to his lack of time on the water over the last few weeks but he took plenty of confidence from his performance.

"I haven't been doing much training," he said. "I think I trained three times in three weeks with the graduation process and school assignments and that sort of stuff.

"I was fairly happy with how I did considering those things."

Bain said the fact Olympic and world champion Ken Wallace was missing from the field took some gloss off his achievements but he was happy overall.

He finished the event with two gold medals after taking out the under-18 200m and 500m races.

Over the summer, Bain will eye the NSW State Championships and the Oceania Championships, which is a part of the Olympic selection process.

He said he was hopeful of being selected for the London Games but admitted he had ground to make up.

"I'll have a dig and see how I go and just try to push the older boys," he said.

"It's unlikely but we'll see."

Bain's fellow Sunshine Coast elite kayaking squad member Keren Ten Tye was the surprise of the tournament, finishing second in the 1000m and third in the 200m and 500m after a lengthy absence from the sport.

The mother of two only returned to the sport three months ago but has made solid inroads ever since.
