Teens who filmed possum torture escape jail time
TWO teenagers have been sentenced to 12 months' probation after they pleaded guilty to animal cruelty for repeatedly running over a possum with a car, which they filmed.
The RSPCA originally charged Hunter Lawrence Jonasen and Callum Gibson McKenzie, both aged 17, with serious animal cruelty, which carries a maximum penalty of seven years' imprisonment.
One of the teens shared the video on social media on Christmas Day last year.
The pair pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of animal cruelty, which carries a three-year jail term, in Brisbane's Magistrates Court.
RSPCA lawyer Greg McGuire told the court the accused found the incident amusing.
