Tennis stars resting up before Games

TENNIS: Unlike their golfing counterparts, the biggest names in tennis are pulling out all stops to chase gold in Rio.

A day after world No.2 Andy Murray’s withdrawal from the Rogers Cup in Toronto, world No.3 Roger Federer and No.4 Rafael Nadal have followed suit.

Wimbledon winner Murray said he wanted to rest before defending his Olympic singles crown in Rio.

Federer, set to chase his third Olympic medal at the Rio Games, said he too needed more time off after Wimbledon.

“Looking ahead, it is best for me that I take more time,” the 34-year-old said.

Recently cleared to compete at Rio despite his failure to complete the qualification criteria, Nadal said he was not fit enough to play in Toronto.

He has only recently resumed practising after pulling out of the French Open with a wrist injury before the third round.

World No.1 Novak Djokovic is the top seed at the Rogers Cup, which runs from Saturday until July 31.

The Olympic tennis competition begins on August 6.
