Terror attack in china leaves 28 dead and 113 injured

A MASS stabbing at a Chinese train station has left 28 people dead and 113 injured in what the Chinese president has labelled a "violent terrorist attack."

Witnesses said knife-wielding attackers dressed in black burst into Kunming railway station on Saturday evening (local time) and began slashing indiscriminately.

Police shot dead five of the attackers at the train station, with state media blaming "separatist forces" from the far western region of Xinjiang for the attack.

Kunming resident Yang Haifei told Xinhua that he was buying a ticket when he saw a group of people rush into the station and start attacking bystanders.

"I saw a person come straight at me with a long knife and I ran away with everyone," he said

Graphic pictures on the Twitter-like microblogging service Sina Weibo showed bodies covered in blood lying on the ground at the station.

State television showed police wrapping a long, sword-like knife in a plastic bag, amid heavy security at the station.

Chinese president Xi Jinping has ordered no effort be spared to track down those behind the attack.

He called for "all-out efforts" in the investigation and for the attackers to be punished "in accordance with the law."

Beijing's top security official Meng Jianzhu is understood to be heading to the scene.
