Thieves target Hervey Bay church twice in just two weeks

STAFF at the Hervey Bay Uniting Church were left reeling after thieves broke into the church for the second time in less than a fortnight.

Police are searching for the thieves who broke into the church and smashed through a wall in the toilet block in order to steal a safe on Tuesday night.

Hervey Bay Uniting Church Pastor Graham Huth said the safe only contained a small amount of cash. However, it was also where the church kept their important documents.

The latest break-in follows one which was reported on October 29 when someone damaged the toilet block door.

Police believed at the time the person had broken into the church in order to take a shower.

Mr Huth said staff were feeling frustrated after the breakins.

"Every bit of time that gets put in to maintaining property is time that is not used helping out other people," he said.

Mr Huth said the theft was not going to have a big impact on the church, except for staff time.

"Everyone is just sick of it," he said.

Hervey Bay police Sergeant Richard Whatman said police were called to the church about 8.30am yesterday when staff discovered the break-in.

He said it was not clear what had been used to smash the wall and take the safe.
