Third time lucky for Klaus
JUNIOR Whitsunday sailor Klaus Lorenz will make his way across the Tasman tomorrow ahead of the 2011 New Zealand Optimist National Championships to be held in Nelson.
Klaus will join the Australian sailing team in preparation for the championships which begin on Friday, April 22.
Klaus will be one of nine other sailors from across the country heading to New Zealand to compete in the under-15s division.
Having first competed in the championships in 2009 where he finished in 63rd place, Klaus then returned last year to finish in seventh place.
With such an improvement in placings over that 12 month period, Klaus said he was hoping to have the same fait this year by finishing ahead of the rest of the fleet at the regatta.
“It was a bit of an improvement,” he said.
“So this year I'm hoping to win.”
Klaus said he had been training at least four times a week in recent months to ensure he was in the best possible position to achieve his goal of finishing at least in the top three at the regatta.
Having said this, the talented teenager said the recent rainfall had prevented him from being on the water as much as he had liked to prepare for the event.
But having competed in many national and international events in the past, the Whitsunday sailor said he was ready to set sail in what is his third New Zealand nationals.
“I'm confident to do well,” he said.
