Thomas cards 59 to join exclusive club

GOLF: American Justin Thomas has joined an exclusive club - that includes Australia's Stuart Appleby - of players who have broken 60 on the US PGA Tour.

At 23 Thomas became the youngest of the seven-man club when he shot 11-under par in the first round of the Sony Open in Hawaii.

After winning his third PGA Tour title, the Tournament of Champions on Maui, last weekend, Thomas sank a 15-foot eagle putt on his final hole for his 59.

Fellow American Jim Furyk had the best round recorded on Tour with a 58 at the Travelers Championship last summer.

He also had a 59 in 2013 at the BMW Championship, joining Al Geiberger (1977 Memphis Classic), Chip Beck (1991 Las Vegas Invitational), David Duval (1999 Bob Hope Classic), Paul Goydos (2010 John Deere Classic) and Appleby (2010 Greenbrier Classic).

Thomas started his round at Honolulu's Waialae Country Club with an eagle on his opening hole, chipping in from 34 yards.

He finished with eight birdies and a bogey.

Australian Cameron Smith had a six-under 64 with seven birdies to be tied in second place, five behind Thomas.

The American was calm throughout his round until his playing partners, world No.5 Jordan Spieth and Daniel Berger, celebrated his final putt.

"I think Jordan (Spieth) was more excited than I was,” Thomas said.

Spieth, best friends with Thomas since they were 13, admitted he was more nervous than Thomas.

"It was awesome,” he said. "What an awesome last five rounds he's had.”
