Thrill of seeing new life remains for Toowoomba doctor

TOOWOOMBA'S Dr Victor Volobuev says delivering a baby for the first time is both an exciting and emotional moment.

In his time working as an obstetrician and gynaecologist, Dr Volobuev, 63, said that excitement and emotion never went away - it was the same every time he delivered a baby.

"When I walk out the door and see people (down the street) who thank me and tell me about how their child is growing up, it's the best reward I have in my life," he said.

Dr Volobuev is the director of Blue and Pink at St Vincent's Medical Centre and will retire on June 30. "I love babies and happy families, but it's time to move on," he said.

He estimated he had delivered a few thousand babies during the span of his career.

Dr Volobuev was born and raised in the Ukraine. His wife is also a doctor at the Toowoomba Hospital.

The couple moved to New Zealand before coming to Australia. He also enjoyed working in Germany.

Dr Volobuev worked in both the private and public systems in Toowoomba and spent 10 years at the Toowoomba Hospital before moving to the private practice at St Vincent's five years ago.

He said he loved his job and would miss it, but was very much looking forward to spending time on his hobby farm in Beaudesert.

He is also planning a book about a "dark spot in Middle Age European history".

Dr Brendan Miller will take over Dr Volobuev's position at Blue and Pink.
