Tight finish to touch season

TOUCH FOOTBALL

AFTER two tense deciders on Monday night, touch teams Hamo Rent and Focus on Us were crowned champions of the Whitsunday Touch Association's summer season.

Hamo Rent edged out Spirit Fingers in the B Grade final, hanging on for a gritty 4-3 win in wet and cold conditions at the Whitsunday Sports Park.

Hame Rent started the better of the two teams and were leading at half time before withstanding a spirited comeback from Spirit Fingers in the second half.

With just one try separating the teams late in the game Spirit Fingers gave their all but weren't able to create an equaliser.

Best players from Spirit Fingers were Emily Smart and Dale Hughes while Neridah Hyson and Dylan White were the standouts for Hamo Rent.

There was also a tight finish in the A Grade final with Ray White falling just short of what would have been a memorable come back in their 7-6 loss to Focus on Us.

Two quick tries from Focus on Us put Ray White behind early but they managed to steady the ship as they battled back to be down 4-3 at halftime.

Coming up against a younger and quicker team in Focus on Us, Ray White did well to keep pace with their opponents but eventually went down 7-6 in an entertaining finish to the season.

Leach Rehtla and Peter Chengody were Ray White's best on the night while Adeline Poid and Zach Hoffman earned the nod as the champions' best performers.

The Whitsunday Touch Association are looking to start their second season some time in mid July and encourage any interested players or teams to nominate in the next few weeks.

Anyone interested in participating should phone Bernard Woods on 0429 470 017.
