Time for creativity
NOW'S the time to get your crafting hats on and let your imaginations run wild, as the Whitsunday Reef Festival's Street Parade (August 1), Recyclable Regatta (August 9) and Wearable Art competitions (August 8) edge ever closer.
The Street Parade's Heart of the Reef theme always ensures some interesting float designs, with prizes for the most unusual and wacky design.
The Recyclable Regatta is an on water raft race where teams of two or three create a raft out of recyclable materials like bottles, drums, pipes and other items that would otherwise end up on the scrap heap.
Previous years have seen some impressive entries although some craft and crews are lucky to make it to the finish line.
There are two divisions - kids (6 - 12) and open, and there is also a prize for the best dressed raft.
Another Reef Festival highlight that requires some preparation is the Wilmar Sugar Wearable Art Awards, showcasing brilliant designs while underlining an important message.
Wearable Art is an international art form - it is "art that walks" and a colourful, innovative, interesting means of artistic expression for all ages and genders.
