Tip-off leads to woman charged with armed robbery of bank

POLICE acted on a tip-off before raiding a unit and arresting a woman wanted for the armed robbery of a bank.

Tania Elizabeth Gerczko appeared in Ipswich Magistrates Court yesterday, charged with the May 22 robbery of the Bank of Queensland at Redbank Plains.

The 46-year-old was arrested following an Ipswich CIB investigation, which concluded with the search of a Redbank Plains unit on Tuesday.

Detectives also seized a replica revolver that they will allege was used in the robbery.

Bank robberies are now rare - not just in Ipswich but across the country - with security significantly improved over the years and most crooks seemingly no longer willing to take the risk.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Heath McQueen said it had been the first bank robbery he had investigated since 2006.

Police hope the successful investigation will act as a further deterrent.

"It's a good result that has come from a good investigation from the CIB," Snr Sgt McQueen said.

Gerczko, from Riverview, did not apply for bail when she appeared in court yesterday and the case was adjourned to June 24.
