Tired net puts bathers at risk

CONCERNED Dingo Beach resident Frank Johnson was assured repairs to the Dingo Beach stinger net would be begin in early November.

But there has been no fix so far.

Mr Johnson has described rotting timber support posts and huge tears in the netting, but the failing of the net is only clear when the complete structure is out of the water.

After writing to the Whitsunday Regional Council in October Mr Johnson was optimistic after a reply from Adam Hagy, the manager of Parks and Gardens, stating he would facilitate a speedy fix to the net.

Now Mr Johnson is more frustrated than ever.

"I know delay is all part of the game but they are so lethargic and have not even advised the public of the danger,” he said. "They knew about it and they haven't told anyone about it.”

Council said the time frame for the planned repair work has changed.

"Due to the nature of the substantial work required it was deemed that the work, which included pile driving of new posts, would not be carried out until the tide allowed it,” council said.

January 9 is the new date for which work will commence.

In the meantime Mr Johnson believes the council has a responsibility to inform the public of the net's condition.

"They are putting people in danger by not telling people there are holes in the net,” he said.

However, council said stinger nets were installed to minimise the risks to the public.

"They do not eliminate the risks. Even with the enclosure in perfect condition it is still possible for jellyfish to infiltrate the net,” council said.

"If swimmers (want) to further reduce the risks they should wear a stinger suit. There are signs located at Dingo Beach alerting swimmers to the danger stingers pose.”

Council will review older types of enclosures and research a more reliable, cost effective option.
