Tourist chips in for a hole-in-one

AMERICAN tourist Richard Schiffers visited Brookwater Golf and Country Club this month as part of his mission to play Australia's top 50 golf courses in 50 days.

He won't forget Brookwater in a hurry after scoring a hole-in-one on the 155m par three.

General manager Warren Seeto said hole-in-ones were rare on the course but remarkably there were two in the space of six days after a female member popped one in on the par three 16th.

Mr Seeto said the fifth hole was a challenge, with players having to land the ball on an elevated tee.

"You basically look down into a valley and there are bunkers left and right," he said.

"You need to carry your tee shot over a bunker to land on the green. It is a tough green to hit.

"It is not that long, depending on where the tee position is. On the day it was towards the back.

"Richard hit a seven iron in to the green, landed it right next to the pin and it rolled in."

Mr Schiffers was presented with a flag recognising his achievement. He was on a remarkable quest of his own.

Brookwater is Queensland's top rated golf course by the respected Australian Golf Digest magazine and number 25 in Australia, so it was on Mr Schiffer's list.

"There was an article written about Richard in Inside Golf magazine. I think he was about halfway through his list when he came to us," Mr Seeto said.

Brookwater members were glued to their TV sets earlier this week as John Senden contested the US Masters but just failed to make the cut. Senden is coached by Brookwater professional Ian Triggs.

"John was unlucky to miss a short putt on Friday for par to make the cut, but that's golf," Seeto said.

And golf is being celebrated out at Brookwater right now.

"Golfers can enjoy a number of great offers to celebrate our 10th birthday, so there has never been a better time to play Queensland's best golf course - and perhaps even score a hole-in-one," Mr Seeto said.
