Two Carrera Cup wins for Campbell sends warning shot

MEMO to the 19 drivers in the Porsche Carrera Cup - here comes the boy from Warwick.

Just two years out of year 12 at Warwick State High School, Matt Campbell has won the first two races in round 5 of the cup at Sydney Motorsport Park.

He won both races on Saturday from Nick Foster under the McElrea Racing banner.

After starting on the front row of the grid in race 1, Campbell won by three seconds after Foster was handed a five-second penalty for breaking the start.

Campbell didn't need any penalty in race 2, he was first across the line after a ding-dong battle with Foster winning by .17 of a second.

In the first race, Campbell had the fastest lap but Foster was fastest in the second but the prizes are not for fastest laps but first across the line.

Campbell wrote on social media "far out what a day" and so he should after best performances of two fourths in the first four rounds before two race wins yesterday in round 5.

He has proved to be a top sporting all-rounder, Campbell was a regular in Darling Downs school hockey teams even when his focus was on motor racing.

But the hand and eye co-ordination needed in hockey is also so important in a sport where his dream is to be a full-time professional driver.

He told event organisers at the end of the day he couldn't be happier starting on the front row and having two wins.

Today, (Sunday) he has the chance to win the round and be on top of the podium but must hold his nerve in the final race at Sydney Motorsport Park at 12:45pm over 17 laps.

After two races this weekend, he has moved from 10th to 7th in standings. He has 365 points and leader Steven Richards, who didn't finish the second race yesterday, has 606.5.

There are three rounds after this weekend so plenty of time remains for Campbell to move further up the standings.
