UPDATE 6PM: The southbound lanes of Steve Irwin Way have reopened at Glass House Mountains following a double fatality earlier in the afternoon.

The northbound lane is still closed.

An elderly couple died and two others were seriously injured in a multi-vehicle crash along Steve Irwin Way.

The collision happened just after 2pm outside the Matilda Service Station, near Bowen Rd at Glasshouse Mountains.

Emergency services pronounced one man dead on scene.

An elderly woman who was the deceased man's female passenger, has also died.

Police have closed the road in both directions following the crash, involving a SUV, two sedans and a B-Double Truck.

Two people have been taken to Nambour General Hospital with serious injuries.

Steve Irwin Way, near Bowen Rd, was expected to be closed until 6pm.
