Unusual sightings at islands

LOCAL fishing guru Bob Spees said there had been some unusual catches around the islands this week - longtail tuna.

"Very strange for this time of the year, but they're big fish," he said.

"Most of the fish are around 10kg or more.

"These things are hitting shallow divers like your Halcos and your Gold Bombers."

Mr Spees said out the front of Hayman Island there had been reports of black marlin.

"They ones they have seen are quite large fish," he said.

Those chasing trout are also in luck, with Edwards Island, Leader Shoal and Mackerel Bay producing.

"And they're getting some nice coral trout, but in the deeper waters.

"About the 20m mark off the edge of the islands."

Shute Harbour has been fishing well, with Mr Spees recommending a trip early in the morning or late in the afternoon for queenfish.

"They're also getting grassy sweetlip on the bottom along with the odd trout," he said.

"The best bait for them is live herring or live pilchards."

Around the rockwalls this week, Mr Spees said the Whitsunday Sailing Club had been the pick of the spots.

"There's been some nice grunter getting caught there," he said.

"Along with queenfish and GTs."

The Proserpine River is set to experience some big tides this week.

"So the crabs have been a bit slow, but that should improve with the bigger tides," Mr Spees said.

Anglers can also try targeting the rock bars.

"They're getting a few grunter and a few king salmon in the shallows off the edge on live prawns or live small poddy mullet," Mr Spees said.

"But it will be hard going with the bigger tides."

The dam has been a bit slow of late, but Mr Spees said there was still a catch to be landed.

"They're still getting a few fish trolling the main basin on the edges of the weed beds," he said.

"The best lures that seem to be working are the Dr Evils or the Poltergeist in green.

"Why, I don't know, but they just seem to like that colour."
