Vella’s ‘busiest ever’ Good Friday blows a fuse

A Mackay takeaway shop has recorded its “busiest ever” Good Friday in 10 years – serving up more than 800 orders to the hungry masses.

Vella’s Fish Bar on Sydney Street sold 1480 pieces of fish, 465 kgs of chips, 760 potato scallops and 280 prawn cutlets on Friday as a line of hungry customers snaked out the door and down the street.

Owner Judith Fenech said staff were smashed with orders from 10.30am to 8pm.

The shop was so buzzing with customers and orders that it even blew a fuse.

“A fuse in a power pole blew about 7pm and we had to call Ergon,” Ms Fenech said.

“Apparently we were sucking up too much power.”

The loss of power during the peak rush meant some people had to wait up to 45 minutes for orders.

Ms Fenech said most customers were understanding of the situation.

“It was crazy, but I have been doing it for 40-odd years,” she said.

“We managed and pushed through it.”

Ms Fenech thanked her loyal customers and the wider Mackay community for their ongoing support of the shop.

“This was our busiest ever. We always have a very good Good Friday, but this was the best in 10 years.

“If we didn’t have good food, (the customers) wouldn’t be here – I feel very proud.”
