Veterans vie for Wintersun crown in Whitsundays

VETERANS GOLF: Veteran golfers from all across the country descended on Proserpine this week, taking to the green for the Sugar View Estate Wintersun Carnival.

Spread over two big days of 18 holes apiece, the golfers were still at it at the time of going to press.

The men contested a single stroke event.

After day one, Greg Alice was leading the Men's Gross division with 78.

Competition appears fierce within the group, with Gregory Kent, Gregory Lingard and Grahame George all tied for second on 81.

Meanwhile, Mark Peady was heading up the Men's Nett A-grade with 72.

Jeremy Pembroke headed into day two as B-grade leader on 69.

And Bevan Glynn was looking set to take the C-grade title with 70.

The ladies took to the course on Monday for a stableford competition.

With day one over, Leone Burton was leading the A-grade division with 33 points.

Tina Badenhorst finished day one on 30 points to lead the B-grade.

While Beryl Naylor headed into day two leading the C-grade with 33 points.

With the Proserpine leg of the championship having wrapped up yesterday afternoon, the golfers will now head south for the Sarina Wintersun Classic on Thursday.

Then it's on to Pioneer Valley on Friday for the final event of the series.
