TWO snakes fighting for the attentions of a female are proof spring is coming a month early to the Sunshine Coast.

Carolyn Cresswell spotted the carpet snakes in a front lawn on The Esplanade at Sunshine Beach yesterday about 8.30am while walking her dog Josie.

"I didn't see them at first... nor did Josie," she said.

"But they made this hiss and flicking sound."

She took a video of the carpet snakes and sent it to a snake catcher.

"At first I thought they were mating but the snake catcher said they were actually in combat - fighting to impress a female," she said.

Snakes enter a state of brumation during winter, in which they sleep most of the time but may emerge on warmer, sunny days.
