FORMER Bundaberg girl Rebecca Dennis is asking for help from her home town to get her into an ambitious project to help save the orangutans in Borneo.

Ms Dennis attended Burnett Heads State School and Shalom College before leaving at 21 to see the world.

If she is successful in getting into the project, she will spend five months in the jungles of Borneo helping to restore a rainforest and rescuing and rehabilitating orangutans.

Ms Dennis said the project was an initiative by environmental group DeforestACTION, which is looking for 10 young people to join in.

“They're trying to raise awareness and support for the project,” she said.

The 10 young people chosen would also star in a 3D feature film about the project under the auspices of National Geographic Entertainment.

“It sounds really fantastic,” Ms Dennis said.

“I would love to get into the project. It would be an amazing experience.”

As part of the competition to get into the project, Ms Dennis had to get a video made of herself talking about who she is, her experiences and why she is interested in taking part.

The video was uploaded onto a website yesterday, and Ms Dennis is now asking the people of Bundaberg to watch it and give it a rating out of five.

The video can be viewed at

To vote for the video, people can click on “logged in” at the bottom of the video where the option to rate it is, then create a login – or use Facebook, Myspace or Windows Live logins.

“Then, back at the bottom of my video, they can rate it out of five stars, five being magnificent,” Ms Dennis said.

Ms Dennis, who is working full-time as well as studying marine science at university, said the video was shot by the husband of a friend of hers.

“We were at Byron Bay doing dolphin ecology research, and while we were there I thought it would be a good time to do the video,” she said.
