Volunteer gains state honour
MARLENE Marlone is a woman who is always there to lend a helping hand.
And when it comes to volunteers, there are none better.
As a result, Marlene was one of nine Queenslanders recognised for her contribution to sport at the 2010 Valuing Volunteers in Sport Awards night in Brisbane on December 6.
Marlene has had over 20 years involvement with rugby league with the last 10 being with the Proserpine-Whitsunday senior and junior rugby league clubs.
She first became involved with the club when her own sons decided to strap on their footy boots.
Since then the roles of treasurer, registrar, canteen lady, bar lady and fundraiser organiser are just some of the titles that Marlene has come under.
Marlene said she was grateful to receive such a high accolade.
“I'm very privileged,” she said.
“I just thoroughly enjoy it and you meet lots of people. I just do anything I can.”
Member for Whitsunday Jan Jarratt congratulated Marlene for her outstanding contribution to sport and recreation in the Whitsundays.
“Marlene is among the many volunteers in our region who devote hours of their own time to ensure that we have a strong network of sports offered locally,” she said.
Sport Minister Phil Reeves also acknowledged the importance of locals who do their all to ensure sport and recreation clubs can continue to develop and thrive in communities like the Whitsundays.
“Marlene and her fellow winners have gone above and beyond to support and develop the sports they love,” he said.
