Von Einem wins our first table tennis medal since 1984

TABLE TENNIS: Samuel von Einem has won Australia's first medal in table tennis at the Paralympics since 1984.

It was close to the ultimate, a gold, but unfortunately, Einem went down in five sets to the world number one, Florian van Ecker, from Belgium.

"I've never beaten Florian before, I've never run him that close before, so I'm really quite happy with that performance," he said.

"I just wanted to get a medal really.

"When I made the final I was so, so happy.

"I wanted to have a red hot crack at gold, and I feel like I've done that."

Einem said it had been a long time since Australia has medaled in the event.

"I'm disappointed not to get the gold but silver is still great," he said.
