Dream on

BIG SPENDERS are paying up to $25,000 a week to stay in Byron Bay this Christmas/New Year period, proof the holiday destination has lost none of its gloss.

"Front row" luxury properties at Wategos Beach - including the house where Aussie supermodel Elle Macpherson is believed to be staying - top the list for most expensive accommodation, followed by beachfront homes at Clarks Beach, Belongil and Suffolk Park.

Prestige property agent Graham Dunn has about 20 luxury properties on his books, including $25,000 and $15,000 a week properties at Wategos Beach, a $9000 a week property at Clarks Beach and a $6000 a week two bedroom apartment at Belongil.

Despite the huge price tags, Mr Dunn says there is no shortage of people prepared to pay the big bucks.

"We have had to turn away a number of late inquiries, as 100% of our holiday let properties are fully booked through to the New Year," he said.

"There had been particular demand for ultra-luxury offerings, with one expat seeking to rent a property listed at $25,000 a week for a total of five weeks, however due to pre-bookings he had to settle for just two weeks," he said.

So what does $25,000 get you?

"An absolutely breathtaking house, with everything that opens and shuts," Mr Dunn said

The $25,000 a week Wategos home on his website has four bedrooms and three bathrooms, private and direct beach access, an infinity pool with beach views, gourmet kitchen, heated floors, four large flatscreen TVs, heated towel rails and a concierge service on request.

Mr Dunn said demand was the highest he had seen in years and was proof of Byron's growing international reputation.

"These people can afford to go anywhere in the world but they want to come to Byron Bay," he said.

WHAT $25,000 could buy you:

Two weeks in the Bahamas on Little Whale Cay, a private 40ha tropical island.

Two weeks in Paris, in a luxury three bedroom apartment on the Champs Elysees with views of the Eiffel Tower.

One week in the honeymoon suite of the Hotel Santa Costa, a five star luxury hotel on the Amalfi Coast of Italy.

One week in the Park View executive suite of the Four Seasons Hotel in New York, with views of the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building and downtown Manhattan

Two nights at the seven star Burj Al Arab Hotel in Dubai, with a Rolls-Royce fleet at your disposal, butlers on call around the clock and dining under the sea and stars.
