Wet racing at ‘come and try day’

THE Whitsunday Moto Sports Club (WMSC) hosted the national come and try day in conjunction with Motorcycling Australia at the Whitsunday Raceway on Sunday.

More than 35 riders from across North Queensland signed-on for the event but the wet weather reduced the number game enough to hit the track.

WMSC Club president Andrew Auld said there was a great response from new riders, with a dozen new faces trying out at the event.

North Gregory resident Jodie Duffy was battling a few nerves before testing her skills for the first time on the custom-built road racing track.

Duffy has had minimal experience riding dirt bikes and was looking forward to going for a spin on her boyfriend's Yamaha YZ250F supermoto bike.

Auld said the event was also well attended by current WMSC members.

"The wet weather definitely adds another element to racing and all members were keen to get as much track time as possible," he said.

"It's very slippery out there and spectators enjoyed watching riders backing it in around the turns."

Many experienced riders made the most of the practice session, improving their technique in the lead up to round 1 of the Queensland Supermoto Titles which will be held on the Gold Coast from April 4-5.

Auld said plans were also starting to take shape for the 2014 Australian Supermoto Championships in June.

"It's all coming together really quickly and we have a great foundation set so we are definitely aiming for bigger and better competition this year," he said.
