Wet weather brings dengue risk
WHITSUNDAY residents are encouraged to take steps to limit the risk of dengue fever.
With tropical wet weather frequently hitting the region, breeding spots can develop easily.
A Whitsunday Regional Council spokesperson said there were a number of precautions that residents should take.
"Dengue mosquitoes only need a small amount of water to breed in,” the spokesperson said.
"We're encouraging residents and businesses to empty all their pot plant trays and containers holding water once a week.
"Residents are reminded to tip out any water in pot plant bases and containers, store items that can hold water in a dry spot or undercover, throw out any rubbish lying around and clean out your gutters.
"When outdoors, make sure you wear long sleeves, trousers, a hat and use an effective insect repellent.”
Dengue fever symptoms can include sudden fever, extreme tiredness, intense headache, muscle and joint pain, loss of appetite, flushed skin and a red rash.
Mosquitoes can also spread a range of other viruses, including Ross River fever, Barmah Forest virus and encephalitis.
Anyone experiencing symptoms should seek urgent medical attention.
