Once in a millennium blood moon, eclipse mean end of world?
COULD the blood moon on September 28 really be a sign tied to Biblical prophecies talking about the end of the world?
Respected Sunshine Coast astronomer Owen Bennedick thinks so.
Mr Bennedick has never subscribed to end of the world theories, but he believes the facts show the blood moon on September 28 will be historic.
It's the fourth in a tetrad (series of blood moons) landing on a Jewish festival.
At this time, there will also be a total solar eclipse and a partial solar eclipse.
"This kind of moon event has been associated with major changes in Israel and political systems worldwide," Mr Bennedick said.
Famous periods when this lunar line-up has occurred included the Spanish Inquisition, the start of the Second World War and, in 1948, when Israel became a nation.

"What's special about this moon event is that it's a full blood moon with a solar eclipse and partial with it," Mr Bennedick said.
"The next time this will occur will be in another 1000 years."
And to make it even more momentous, Mr Bennedick said a "super moon" will also form over Israel about September 28.
Mr Bennedick is a strong believer in American evangelist Mark Blitz's theories on blood moons and their links with the Bible.
Mr Blitz predicts the blood moons are signs of the end of the world and the second coming of Jesus Christ.
He quotes the Biblical passage of Joel 2 vs 31 and Act 2 verse 20 which say "the sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and notable day of the Lord."
Mr Bennedick also believed the fourth blood moon was closely linked to the second coming.
"The Bible says there will be signs and wonders in the stars," he said.
"All of the events are linking together.
"There are major changes happening and by the end of August, there could be a really big financial crash in America.
"This is the most significant (astronomic) event in our lifetime.
"The second coming of Christ is very near. You only have to look to the floods and earthquakes happening around the world and even in our area.
"We've had several earthquakes in two weeks.
"There are signs on the earth and signs in the stars, warning for us as humans to think differently."
