When Mackay gyms can open with 24/7 access and no bookings

UPDATE 4.45PM:

Fitness Australia has announced it received confirmation in writing from the QLD Health Department that its Stage 3 COVID Safe Indstury Plan has been approved, effective from 12 noon on Friday, July 3.

The updated plan allows for: Unsupervised 24/7 access; 1 person per 4sq m for all facilities; booking requirements removed; showers and changerooms reopened; and remove of 'areas', as outlined in the previous plan

EARLIER:

MACKAY gyms are in a race against the clock to open under Stage 3 COVID Safe guidelines tomorrow.

In a written statement this afternoon, Fitness Australia CEO Barrie Elvish said the governing body was "verbally advised a week ago" that its Stage 3 Industry COVID Safe Plan had been given the tick of approval by the State Government.

However Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young is yet to provide written confirmation that the plan, which acts as a guideline for all affiliate gyms in Queensland, has been approved.

Some Queensland gyms have already advertised they will move to 24/7 opening hours and unrestricted access when Stage 3 goes into effect tomorrow, however Elvish warned they could be jumping the gun.

"We are aware that some operators in Queensland have taken the decision to open tomorrow under the Stage 3 Industry COVID Safe Plan guidelines we proposed … however there remains a possibility that our Industry COVID Safe plan may still be amended."

Muscle Garden Mackay owner Kay Nyenuh said the move to Stage 3 and unstaffed hours would allow him to reopen the Marian gym, which has remained closed through COVID-19, and ease the time burden on members and staff at both locations.

"Our members at Marian are screaming at us every day to open," he said.

"But we'll be waiting. We'll wait and see what the chief health officer recommends. If we still have to maintain a supervised gym, so be it. But if we can go back to unstaffed training that would be a massive help."

Mr Nyenuh said even under the Stage 2 restrictions, Muscle Garden Mackay members had returned in force after months away from the iron paradise.

"We're open 5am to 9pm and pretty much all of our classes have been booked out," he said.

"It's testament to the connection we have with our members here."
