Whisper Bay ramp to open

BOATIES will soon have safe access to the Whitsunday waters from Whisper Bay as five years of campaigning comes to fruition on Monday.

The $3 million upgrade of the VMR boat ramp and breakwater had now finished, Mayor Jennifer Whitney said, with public access from Monday.

Local fishing guru Bob Spees is overjoyed at the announcement.

"It's just fantastic for the whole town, for the boating community, for the safety of everybody," he said.

"I couldn't describe it in words."

Mr Spees said the fight had started "going on five years ago", supported by a dedicated few.

"We bashed doors down on the pollies and we were let down by the Liberal Government for four years," he said.

"It was only the Palaszczuk Government that turned it around."

The project was funded by the Queensland Government and mostly built by local contractors.

Minor upgrades to parking and rigging areas will continue over the coming weeks, but the council has said this won't impact on public access.
