THE Chinese New Year is about to be celebrated in a unique way on Whitehaven Beach thanks to a special partnership between Cruise Whitsundays and Hamilton Island, from January 31-February 6.

WHITEHAVEN Beach on Whitsunday Island has been named the number one eco-friendly beach in the world by CNN.com.

Tourism Whitsundays submitted Whitehaven Beach for consideration for this honour as it believed the local beach deserved the recognition.

Tourism Whitsundays chief executive Peter O'Reilly said he was immensely proud of the efforts of Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, Whitsunday Regional Council, local tour operators and the community to keep Whitehaven so pristine.

“This is a huge honour and one which everyone in the Whitsundays and Australia should be proud of,” he said.

Whitehaven Beach was the only Australian beach to be honoured on the list and was described as being “breathtaking”.

The list was also replicated on leading travel site, Viaggi Republica in Italy.
