WHITFUNDAY ON SUNDAY Dingo Beach to be transformed

LIKE many others her age, Ruby Gorlick can't wait for the Dingo Beach Family Whitfunday this Sunday.

"It's got all the rides and the games and the lollies," the 10-year-old Hydeaway Bay resident said. "And you get to spend your pocket money."

For one day each year, the usually sleepy hamlet of Dingo Beach is transformed into a hive of activity and entertainment.

The annual family fun day brings excitement and community to the fore and this year is no different.

Dingo Beach Progress Association member and Whitfunday organiser Duncan Robb said there would be "spectacular" new rides, food vans, a beer and barbecue tent, around 50 market stalls, a range of activities, competitions and raffles, and the highly popular $1000 lucky draw.

While it started off many years ago as a fundraiser for a nominated charity, Whitfunday has grown to become the annual fundraising day for the Dingo Beach Progress Association.

Funds raised from previous Whitfunday's helped build the progress association's community hall.

Dingo Beach Progress Association president Andy Dinnie said this year's Whitfunday would hopefully raise enough funds to finish the construction of facilities for the association's private camp ground.

"It'll allow us to finalise underneath (the hall) and finish the shower and toilet and office, which'll basically encompass the special interest group camp ground that we're trying to develop there," he said, adding that about $9-10,000 would be "pretty good".

Like others before it, this year's Whitfunday includes sand sculpting, cast net throwing, rolling pin throwing, and cross cut saw competitions, as well as the children's beach races.

Mr Robb said market stalls would open at 10am and the $1000 lucky draw will take place at 3pm.

"(And) don't forget - if the weather's bad in town, it's always good out here," he said.
